We are in October, 2016. The tenth month of the calendar. We follow the Julian and Gregorian Calenders. But the interesting thing is that ‘Oct’ means eight. Then how could it be 10th month of the year. Actually, In Old Roman calender October retained its name (from Latin octo meaning “eight”) after January and February were inserted into the calendar that had originally been created by the Romans.
October is commonly associated with the season of autumn in the Northern hemisphere and spring in the Southern hemisphere, where is the seasonal equivalent to April in the Northern hemisphere and vice versa. October has a length of 31 days. It was originally the 8th month of the Roman Calendar until 153BCE. October was named during a time when the calendar year began with March. Which is why its name no longer with its corresponds with its placement in Julian and Gregorian Calenders. Its Latin name is “October mensis”.
